Bilateral common carotid artery occlusion in Wistar rats produces subtotal forebrain hypoperfusion with oxidative stress and ischemic brain injury; it is a hypoperfusion model rather than a territorial MCA stroke.

Model identity

Model name
bilateral common carotid artery occlusion Wistar rat
Species
rat
Taxonomy ID
10116
Strain
Wistar

Biological characteristics

Phenotype stage
Hypoperfusion and oxidative injury develop over hours to days; chronic white-matter changes require longer follow-up.
Research questions
Subtotal cerebral ischemia; oxidative stress; chronic hypoperfusion; white-matter injury.
Limitations
BCCAO does not reproduce an acute focal MCA infarct or penumbra. Collateral flow and occlusion completeness determine injury, so TTC focal infarct measurement is not a valid primary readout.
