Permanent occlusion of both internal carotid arteries and the left vertebral artery in baboons produces chronic cerebral hypoperfusion with white-matter changes, glial activation and hippocampal neuronal loss.

Model identity

Model name
three-vessel occlusion baboon
Species
baboon (Papio anubis)

Biological characteristics

Phenotype stage
White-matter and hippocampal changes develop over weeks to months.
Research questions
Chronic cerebral hypoperfusion; white-matter injury; large-animal translational studies.
Limitations
A large-animal chronic hypoperfusion model, not an acute focal stroke; species availability, ethics and cost limit use.
