high-fat diet-induced obesity Sprague-Dawley rat
Sprague-Dawley rats fed high-energy (fat and/or sugar) diets are the prevalent diet-induced obesity rat model, showing glucose intolerance, dyslipidemia and hypertension. A 45% kcal-fat diet for 8 weeks produces chronic metabolic stress with hepatic histological changes. Rats fed a 45% kcal high-fat diet rapidly gain weight, become hyperinsulinemic and develop insulin resistance in 4-6 weeks.

- Species
- rat
- Strain
- Sprague-Dawley
Biological characteristics
- Research questions
- Whether chronic high-fat feeding reproduces metabolic syndrome components in Sprague-Dawley rats, and how diet-induced metabolic stress affects liver regenerative capacity.
- Limitations
- Outbred stock; the magnitude of glucose intolerance and dyslipidemia depends on diet composition and feeding duration.
