Wistar fatty rat

The Wistar fatty rat is an autosomal recessive obese strain with leptin-resistance-type biology: hyperphagia, severe obesity, hyperinsulinemia and impaired glucose tolerance, progressing to overt diabetes in fatty homozygotes; used to study obesity with diabetic complications.

Biological characteristics

Phenotype stage
Obesity is evident from weaning age; hyperinsulinemia and glucose intolerance develop over weeks to months; beta-cell failure and sustained hyperglycemia occur in a subset as animals age.
Research questions
Leptin-resistant obesity, progression from hyperinsulinemia to glucose intolerance, and diabetic complication endpoints in fatty rats.
Limitations
Not all fatty homozygotes become frankly hyperglycemic; the strain carries a leptin-resistance background rather than a defined human T2D gene, and substrain differences affect progression.
